Where Should We Go?

I had several completely different travel conversations this week. One couple is planning a trip to Cape Cod and a future trip to Japan. I also booked a mother-daughter Danube River cruise. I'm helping a couple narrow down plans for Yellowstone next summer. A couple is thinking about an all-inclusive getaway for their anniversary. And I've had more cruise conversations than I can count.

It's funny because all of these travelers are looking for something different. Some want scenery. Some want history. Some want relaxation. Some want adventure. Some want a little bit of everything. And yet one of the most common questions I get is still:

"Where should we go?"

I always wish there was a simple answer. I wish I could say, "Everyone should go to Alaska," or "Europe is always the right choice." But that's not how travel works. The best trip for your neighbor might be the worst trip for you. The best cruise for your friends might leave you wondering what all the fuss was about. The more trips I plan, the more convinced I become that there isn't one perfect vacation.

There is only the vacation that's perfect for you. That's why I spend so much time asking questions when I first meet with clients. Here are some of the questions I might ask during our initial consultation:

  • What do you enjoy doing?
  • What does a great day on vacation look like?
  • Do you want to stay busy from sunrise to sunset or sit on a balcony with a cup of coffee and a great view?
  • Do you love museums and history? Small towns? National parks? Beaches? Food? Wildlife?

The answers are different every single time. And that's what's so great about travel planning! If everyone wanted the same vacation, my work would be pretty boring. Instead, I get to help people sort through all the possibilities and figure out what fits them best.

Sometimes that leads to an Alaska cruise or to Europe. Sometimes it's an ocean cruise, or sometimes it's a river cruise. Sometimes it's a destination they hadn't even considered when we started talking.

So if you've been asking yourself where to go next, maybe the better question is this:

What kind of memories are you hoping to make?

Once we figure that out, the destination usually becomes a whole lot easier.
