Packing for a vacation can be a challenge, especially when you want to bring everything you need without overstuffing your suitcase. Flying as a non-rev (an airline employee flying for free on standby), I remember having to pack very strategically. My parents made us pack in a backpack so we could easily carry our own bag and keep it with us, in the event we didn’t make it on the airplane. As you can imagine, it wasn’t easy schlepping our backpacks through the Minneapolis airport, sometimes running from gate-to-gate to try and make the next flight option. So I grew up maximizing space! This has stuck with me, so I am a minimalistic packer. Here are some of my expert tips to help you pack more items efficiently:
1. Choose the Right Bag
I like to have a suitcase with expandable sides and internal compartments. The expandable sides give you the flexibility to add more items if needed. Hard-shell suitcases can also help you pack more tightly as they maintain their shape. I always try to ensure I don’t expand the sides until I’m returning from the trip. This gives me extra space for souvenirs! On the other hand, if I just can’t leave the sides unexpanded on the way to my vacation destination, I make sure to pack a fabric bag or beach bag with enough space to carry my new trinkets home. If you’re flying, just make sure you double check your airline’s bag size and weight requirements.
2. Make a Detailed Packing List
A packing list helps you stay organized and ensures you don’t forget anything. I start making my list weeks in advance of the vacation. I also break my list up between items I can pack early and items I need to pack last-minute (like my toothbrush, toothpaste and chargers).
3. Use Packing Cubes and Compression Bags
Packing cubes help you compartmentalize your items, making it easier to fit more into your suitcase. I use a special bag for my jewelry and another for my makeup. My makeup bag folds up to place in my suitcase, but unzips and hangs in the bathroom in destination. I even have a bag to keep my cords so they don’t get tangled. Keeping things like these organized helps keep me tidy away from home.
4. Roll Your Clothes

I used to hate this piece of advice! I was a stuffer – I didn’t even fold my clothes when I was packing as a child. But now I’m a diligent roller. Rolling clothes instead of folding them can save significant space, but this will also reduce wrinkles. I like this tip especially for my dresses and skirts – they’re easy to unroll and hang up when I get to my home away from home.
5. Pack small items within big ones
This one seems to be self explanatory, but is a great way to gain a little extra space if you aren’t already doing it. Place smaller items like socks and underwear inside larger items like shoes or hats. Use every single little space in your suitcase.
6. Pack Multi-Purpose Items
Choose clothing and accessories that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a scarf can be used as a blanket, a sarong, or a fashion accessory. Create outfits that can be mixed and matched with the same pieces.
7. Wear Your Bulkiest Items
To save space in your suitcase, wear your bulkiest items. When I fly, especially because I live in such a cold climate, I always wear jeans, a hoodie and my biggest shoes or boots. This saves room for more items in your suitcase!
8. Use Travel-Sized Toiletries
Opt for travel-sized toiletries or transfer your products into smaller containers. Solid toiletries like shampoo bars and soap can also save space and avoid liquid restrictions. This is also helpful if you’re not sure what toiletries await you in your room. I hate hotels that don’t have conditioner for my long hair, so I always make sure to have some with me!
10. Plan for Laundry
If your trip is long, consider doing laundry during your vacation. This allows you to pack fewer clothes and reuse items. Many hotels and resorts offer laundry services, or you can bring a small packet of detergent for hand washing. I often hand wash my undergarments in the bathroom tub or sink. It works great!
By following these tips, you can maximize your suitcase space and ensure you have everything you need for a fantastic vacation. Happy packing!
